National Quality Week
2011/11/07

This year National Quality Week (NQW) is from 7-11 November and during this time we want to raise awareness of:

  1. The importance of QUALITY in everything we do
  2. The quality system within the company, TQMS or Total Quality Management System
  3. Adherence to -and improvement of TQMS

In doing this we are not making quality a one week, or one day event, but rather celebrating what we have and do with regards to QUALITY and reinforcing that we constantly strive to improve in this regard.

To facilitate contributions to continual improvement we have added a category for Preventative Action to our Corrective Action Request form (F-04-04-02). This provides a platform of opportunity for any employee to report something that they perceive as an opportunity for improvement; or something that they realise may lead to a non-conformance, before is actually does.

As per any TQM strategy, employee involvement is critical and valued.

A part of NQW is World Quality Day on Thursday, 10 November. World Quality Day was introduced by the United Nations in 1990 to increase worldwide awareness of the important contribution that quality makes towards a nation's and an organisation's growth and prosperity. In a global economy where success depends on quality, innovation and sustainability, World Quality Day is our chance to reinforce these as the foundation of our organisation and focus on the importance of Quality.

New nest for the Athlone Tower's Peregrine Falcons
2010/11/26

After the City of Cape Town made the decision to demolish two landmark cooling towers earlier this year, concerns were raised about the welfare of the breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons, which has been resident at the power station since nesting boxes were installed on the towers to accommodate them over twenty years ago.

In an attempt to retain the falcons at the site, two new nest boxes were put up in the middle of the year - well ahead of the start of the birds' breeding season in August/September - to substitute for those which would be lost with the implosion of the towers. One was put on the western chimney stack, and one on the eastern end of the power station building.

Soon afterwards, the Peregrines located and started to explore the new nest boxes as possible nest sites for the 2010 season.Their adoption of the replacement accommodation was so complete that by the time the demolition actually took place in late August the falcons had become largely based on the stacks, and actually mated on top of the western chimney only 8 minutes after the destruction of the cooling towers!

By the middle of September the behaviour of the birds suggested that they were incubating a clutch of eggs at the stacks nest box. Successful breeding was confirmed when this site was visited by falcon biologist Andrew Jenkins (FitzPatrick Institute, UCT/Avisense Consulting) and rope access expert Jacques Maree (Toprope) on November 5.

The two found three healthy chicks in the box, just over three weeks old. The chicks were fitted with numbered and colour rings as part of Jenkins' research on the greater Cape Town population of this spectacular and resilient species.

Sent into action are personnel multi-skilled in cutting, joining, fitting, measuring, rewiring and undertaking a host of other assignments to long to list.

While the interview was being conducted, 24 Toprope employees were, for instance, undertaking maintenance-and-inspection work on two oil rigs - the Sedneth 701 and The Richardson
